However, new research shows that hearing loss can also occur after being infected with the COVID-19 virus.

Researchers at the University of Manchester have found a link between hearing problems and Covid-19 in over 56 studies. 

After contamination with COVID, 26 of these studies detected frequent tinnitus in patients. The data summarised by the researchers reveal that about 15% of Covid-19 patients experience perpetual ringing in their ears.



General hearing loss was found in more than 30 of the 56 studies. It shows that about 8% of people with corona virus have impaired hearing.

The onset of hearing loss is usually abrupt and affects both ears. However, it can also develop gradually or affect only one ear.



The long-term effect of Covid-19 infection on hearing has not been fully confirmed. In addition, other viruses such as measles, mumps and meningitis can also cause permanent hearing damage.

However, Covid-19 attacks the nervous system and also certain types of cells in the lungs and blood. 

Research* suggests that Covid-19 may cause inflammation of the auditory nerve and inner ear. It is also important to note that an immune system reaction to the virus can also trigger inflammation of the auditory system.



Tobias Kleinjung, an ear, nose and throat specialist from Zurich, explains that "This statement is medically plausible, but difficult to prove. Kleinjung explains that "The increase in tinnitus complaints in infected people could also be due to the stress caused by the infection." 
On the other hand, it could also be that the coronavirus medication could also be the cause of the tinnitus and hearing loss.
